Coping with the loss of someone you love is one life biggest challenges. It affects no two people the same. The emotions range from shock or anger to disbelief, quilt, and profound sadness. Grief can affect our physical health making it hard to sleep, eat, or for many they find it difficult to focus and think. While no two people are the same not is there a set amount of time in which one should grieve. Grief can be a roller coaster Grief can be filled with many ups and downs, highs and lows. Like many roller coasters, the ride tends to be roughest in beginning, the lows may be deeper and longer. The difficult periods should become less intense and shorter as time goes by, it takes time to work through the loss of a spouse. Every year after a loss, especially at special times such as anniversaries, birthdays, special trips/events we may still experience a strong sense of grief. Source: Hospice Foundation of America Take care of yourself as you grieve. The stress of a major loss can quickly displace your energy and emotional reserves. *face you feelings *try to enjoy hobbies or interest * avoid isolation *don't allow anyone to tell you how to grieve or how long to grieve The mind and body are connected *start daily meditation *start a yoga class *unwind with a massage bi-weekly (decreases stress) *be asleep between the hours of 10 pm and 2 am, these are the hours in which the body heals itself *eat fresh fruits and vegetables daily *drink half your body weight in ounces of alkaline water daily When to seek professional help: Understand first the difference grief and depression. Grief is like the roller coaster; ups and downs, good and bad days. Depression is that feeling of emptiness and despair remain constant in your life. It left untreated depression can lead to significant emotional damage, life-threatening health problems and even suicidal thoughts and follow through's. If you experience any of these issues seek out professional help as soon as possible. You are not alone, so many of us have lost a spouse. I lost my husband Kevin three years again on April 1, 2015 and understand the process all to well. We will never forget or stop loving our spouses, what we learn is how to hope daily. In loving memory of Kevin Lamar Hanks 9/5/78-4/1/15
